What the End of New Server App Sales Means for Custom Charts

Atlassian decided to stop selling apps for current Atlassian Server licenses, and this is effective February 15, 2023. After that date, Jira Server or Confluence Server users won't be able to purchase any new apps from the Atlassian Marketplace.


If you are one of those affected users, you probably have many questions on your mind. Let's find out the answers to popular questions about this recent update.


  1. For Jira/Confluence Server, I use custom charts. Will I be affected by the end of the new server app sales?


No, not at all. You'll not be affected by the end of sales on February 15, 2023, as we will continue providing support for custom charts for Jira and Confluence on Server users until February 15, 2024, when support for Server and Server apps will ultimately end. You can still renew your Custom Charts Server license at any time in 2023, but the cost will be spread out until the end of the license in 2024. 


  1. What will happen on February 15, 2024?


After February 15, 2024, Atlassian and its Marketplace partners won't be providing technical support, security updates, or bug fixes. In other words, Old Street will no longer offer any support or updates for those using custom charts on Jira or Confluence Server beyond that date.

  1. Is it still a good idea to renew custom charts in 2023?


Yes, it's fine to renew your Custom Charts Server license for maintenance if it expires before the end date in 2024. You will not be charged the entire year's fee, but instead, it will be prorated based on the number of months from the time of renewal to February 15, 2024. Let's say you renew on June 15, 2023. You will only pay for 8 months of maintenance.

  1. Can I still use custom charts on the server even after February 15, 2024?


Yes, you can continue to use Custom Charts on the server after their expiration date because they are yours to keep. However, it's important to note that after February 15, 2024, no one can help you in case you encounter any problems. There won't be any functionality or security updates after the said date. We strongly recommend that you switch to a center or the cloud to avoid any serious issues or vulnerabilities in the future.

  1. If I want to stay on the server, will I still get support? 


Unfortunately, you won't be getting any support after February 15, 2024. If you want to get full support, you may consider moving to a data center. Custom charts are the same for both the server and data center. If you use Data Center, you'll also need to install Custom Charts on your server that is hosted by you, just as you would when using Server.


A data center is a good choice if you don't have the resources to switch to the cloud or if you are required to host your data.


  1. I’m considering migrating to the cloud; is this a good decision?


Yes, we highly recommend Cloud. Contrary to what other people say, the cloud is a secure place for hosting your data. This is why Atlassian is concentrating its efforts on Cloud. It's also worth mentioning that many new Custom Charts features were added to Cloud first. 


  1. If I have a Jira or Confluence Server, can I still buy custom charts?


After February 15, 2023, you can no longer buy customer charts if you are on the server. However, if you move to a data center or the cloud, you'll be able to.
