‘Atypical’ is a coming up age series created by Robia Rashid. It premiered on Netflix on August 11, 2017. The series mostly got positive reviews and was renewed for a second season consisting of 10 episodes. This season was released on September 7, 2018, followed by the third season, which was released on November 1, 2019.
‘Atypical’ deals with an 18yr old autistic teenager named Sam who was on a quest to live a normal and independent life like others. This series shows his struggles and turmoils to simplify his life.
Sam, one day, to everyone’s surprise, opened up before his family that he wanted to date. He put up his desire to present a gift to his crush. Listening to that, his father Doug took Sam to his crush’s house but surprisingly found out that Sam’s crush was none other than his 26 yr old therapist Julia. Doug brought him back home and told him to make a girlfriend of his own age and gave various tips to him regarding dating.
Meanwhile, Julia mistook the gifts left outside her house as a sign of her boyfriend cheating on her. She broke up with him but was terrified, finding out that she was pregnant with her boyfriend’s child. Sam’s mother Elsa began an extramarital affair that infuriated Doug, and he threw her out of the house but later brought her back.
Sam’s Younger sister, after getting a scholarship, went to Clayton Preparatory School. As a result, Sam tried to be more independent without her sister’s presence in the school. At first, he felt really lonely but then adjusted himself gradually. He started noting down his experiences in his diary in the form of sketches, which later found out to be useful for him in his career.
The plot of the upcoming fourth season is not known as no trailer has been released yet.
