This series is set in a dystopian future where the world is facing problems like sexually transmitted diseases, environmental pollution, etc. As a result of these problems, the infertility rate among women has drastically increased on a worldwide scale. A civil war in the United States resulted in the establishment of the government of Gilead’s rule. The status of women has declined. These women are also known as Handmaids.
New social classes have also originated. Fanatics and powerful leaders are organizing societies. Women are divided into different classes, like Unwomen, Aunts, etc. They also wear different clothes according to their classes. Commanders, The Eyes, Hunters, Guardians are some of the classes of men.
The story mainly relies on June. She, along with her husband Luke and daughter Hannah tried to leave Gilead. But the trio was captured. June became a Handmaid. Her daughter Hannah was given to an upper-class family.
