The psychological thriller Mindhunter is yet to receive the green signal for its season 3 renewal. Set around the late 70s and the early 80s when the show first debuted on Netflix in 2017 it caught the attention of millions of crime enthusiasts around the world. Based on the book, Mindhunter – Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, the show revolves around real-life cases from the early FBI files which also includes the infamous Atlanta Murders. The beloved characters of FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench and psychologist Wendy Carr became a craze among the Gen Xs and Gen Ys of the globe.
Long gone are the days when a happy ending was appreciated. Maybe that is why the show resonated well with the Millenials. The show challenges the age-old theory that a majority of serial killers are often born due to a troubled childhood and an unsuccessful adult life which initially was the notion of our beloved agents. The recurring and the chilling presence of the charater of the notorious serial killer Edmund Kemper assisting our agents to study how serial killer’s mind works was an added bonus.
With the season 2 finale, fans around the world were left hanging with the mindboggling double endings.The endings seemed to be adrift and fans were left frustrated. But since when is being omniscient satisfying ! The constant need of keeping viewers on the edge of their seat is the new way to garner a huge fanbase. Cliffhanger endings to a season is the new way to keep the viewership intact. The last scene of the season was both chilling and satisfying. With the BTK killer still at large our agents have a long way to go. With the promise of a thrilling season 3 we can just keep our fingers crossed and hope that it won’t be an abrupt wrap.
